Driving Back North Korea
MacArthur was appointed to drive back North Korea while retaining his command of Allied forces in Japan. He received President Truman's permission to press into North Korea and he advanced all the way to the Yalu River- the border between North Korea and Communist China- despite warnings that might provoke China to also play in the war. When China did play a role in the war, the UN forces fell back in disarray. Here, MacArthur requested to bomb the bases of Manchuria. President, though, refused his offer for permission and finally (after the dispute was made public) removed him from command in April 1951.
MacArthur returned to the US, and was given a hero's welcome and congratulations. He was invited to join a joint session in Congress. Another attempt to nominate MacArthur for office of presidency proved to be unsuccessful and fruitless in 1952. Retired from active service, he became office of a large business corporation in the end.
